Obituary for Tommye Joan Summey

Joan Summey, 69, of Waco, passed away May 10, 2016 at her home while in a peaceful sleep. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, June 4 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 1301 Hogan Lane, at I-35 exit 338B, with Rev. Larry Krueger officiating.

Joan was born Dec. 1, 1946 in Waco to Clarence and Ella Mae Lumpkin. She attended St. Mark Lutheran School and graduated from University High School in 1965. After graduation, she went to work at American Income Life Insurance Company in Waco where she met her husband of 50 years. Joan married Les Summey June 10, 1966 at St. Mark Lutheran Church. Les and Joan began their married life in Austin, where they both worked for the State Dept. They later moved to Houston for a short time and then in 1976, back to Waco. Joan rejoined the American Income Life Insurance Company family and worked there for 23 years, until retiring in 2009. There she made several friends that she cared deeply for. She was devoted to her family and loved them immensely. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. Joan was a wonderful wife, mother, and “mamu”.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Cheryl Stovall; and her in-laws, Leslie and Dorothy Summey.

She is survived by her husband, Les Summey; son, Ty Summey and fiance, Theresa; daughter, Stacy Stump; grandchildren, Keri Moon and husband, Tyler, Austin Summey and fiancé, Mariah, Tyler Summey, Dylan Summey, Eli Summey, and Noah Summey; great grandson, Easton Summey; sister-in-law, Beverly Gritter and husband, Kenneth; best friend, Harriet; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Providence Hospice for their outstanding care and to Todd Kahl for his thoughtfulness and help.
