Dr. Juan Antonio Mercado, Lt. Col. (Rtd), 87of Hewitt, passed away on September 22, 2016. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11am Tuesday, September 27, at St. Jerome Catholic Church with Rev. Rakshaganathan Selvaraj as Celebrant, with burial to follow at Waco Memorial Park. Visitation will be on Monday, September, 26, beginning at 5 pm, with Rosary service at 6 pm.
Dr. Mercado was born on June 14, 1929 in San German, Puerto Rico to Juan Mercado Rossi F. and Amalia Almodovar de Mercado. He was a faithful member of St. Jerome Catholic Church and a life member of the Third and Forth Degrees of the Knights of Columbus.
Dr. Mercado attended Polytechnic Institute of Puerto Rico, The University of Maryland, University of Mary Hardin Baylor and Baylor University. Educational Honors received B. A. Magna Cum Laude, MA in political science and history, Honor or President’s List, Mary Hardin Baylor College, Phi Delta Kappa and Who’s Who, Southwestern U. S. selected in 1985 and 1989. Completed Doctorate of Education from Baylor University.
He served in the U S Army ,Defense Department at the Pentagon and Military Defense Attache in Paraguay; receiving diverse service and commendation medal and letters of commendation, The Defense Department Joint Commendation Medal, 1971, U S Army Chief of Staff Certificate of Appreciation – upon retirement, and U S Commander in Chief Certificate of Appreciation; foreign honors received, The Order of National Military Merit and Degree of Knight Commander from the Ministry of Defense Republic of Paraguay. Taught at McLennan Community college for 29 years.
Dr. Mercado was preceded in death by his parents, loving wife, sister Minin and brothers, Fabio and Pascual.
He is survived by his loving daughters, Esther, Violeta and Consuelo (Connie) Mercado; sisters-in-law, Miriam, Gladys, Olga and Ada, many nieces, nephews, and cousins , and grand nieces, nephews and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The St. Teresa of Calcutta Center, of St Jerome Catholic Church
