Obituary for Robert Carleton Harrell

Robert Carleton Harrell
Robert Carleton Harrell
June 3, 1942 – June 27, 2017

Carleton Harrell, 75, of Waco, passed away quietly in his sleep. Visitation will be Friday, June 30, from 5:00-7:00 pm at OakCrest Funeral Home Chapel, 4520 Bosque Blvd, Waco. 254-744-7934

Carleton was born in Shreveport, Louisiana. Shortly thereafter, he moved to Orleans, France, where his father, Col Joe Harrell, oversaw the army hospital. From there, they moved to Waco where he grew up and spent the rest of his life.

Carleton graduated from Waco High, where he met the love of his life, Jan Herring, who he then married August 18, 1964. He graduated with a bachelor’s in business from Baylor University. He and Jan kept the stats for Baylor football and basketball over 30 years. He was an avid bird watcher and served as the president of the Central Texas Audubon Society. He also served as president of the Huaco Outing Club. He and Jan were members of Seventh and James Baptist Church. He enjoyed traveling through the Southwestern United States, camping and hiking with friends and family. He worked as an insurance agent for Safeco Insurance Company, but quickly decided that farming and ranching were more to his liking.

Later in life, he worked for MHMR until he retired in 2010. He had a passion for food- cooking and eating. When asked if he would like pie or cake for dessert, he would always reply, “YES!”

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Joe and Hortense Harrell, his brother, Joe Ed Harrell, and his lovely wife, Jan. He is survived by his three sons - Joey, wife Sa’Lisa; Edward, wife Julie; Carson, wife Elvia; and grandchildren: Katie, Charlie, Israel, and Clara Jan.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that you treat yourself to an enjoyable meal and remember Carleton as he was.
