Obituary for Amada Reyes Ramon

Amada Reyes Ramon, or “Mama,” wife and mother, heart and center of the Ramon family. She was a remarkable woman, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, commitment to God, and to her family. She will be so greatly missed. Mama was born September 13,1920 to Cayetana and Luciano Reyes of Mart, Texas. Mama was born into a family struggling with great disadvantage. They lived without the benefit of any mod-ern convenience or comfort, and life for her then demanded hardiness and discipline. Her caring for her family began early, after her mother died. Mama took charge over her younger siblings, thrusting her into a new role: a caregiver. She would fulfill this role with devotion her entire life, and it would become a definitive component of her character and honor.
In 1940, she married the love of her life, Thomas Ramon, or “Daddy.” They shared their first kiss under a big live oak tree, which still stands today, on La Calle Dos. They would go on to bring 10 children into the world. Early in the their marriage, while Daddy served in World War II, Mama was at home caring for their children. When Daddy returned, and throughout all their years, they worked together to raise their fami-ly, always persisting through hardship. She placed a very strong emphasis on educa-tion. Never having the opportunity to receive one, Mama ensured her children received theirs. But Mama was smart even without traditional schooling, she and Daddy raised their family in spite of adversity. Mama washed clothes by hand, made breakfast and sack lunches daily, and somehow always seemed to make something from nothing. She was resourceful and found ways to fulfill the needs of her family. To look at her hands tells the story of a lifetime of hard work. Mama, together with Daddy, worked against countless obstacles, and overcame them all.
Mama was a woman of great moral character which was exemplified in her faith. She tethered herself and family to the teachings of Jesus Christ. Her children were witnesses to her devotion to God, to prayer, and the Virgen de Guadalupe. Trials and hardships were conquered through Mama’s constant prayer. It was the foundation of her family which nothing could unseat. She showed her love and devotion to her children by covering them in prayer. Her 10 children will each attest that her prayers have protected and brought them to where they are today. She guided her children from birth, to the very last day of her life. She was strong and persevered even in the most challenging and discouraging of times. Her strength, she drew from God, and it was one of her most admirable traits.
Mama’s God given purpose in life was to be a mother. She loved her children dearly and kept up with each one, finding delight in the time they shared together. She treasured her family, all of her many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren. Her home was always open to them, and she cared for, and looked after them the same way she did her own children. She had a truly remarkable memory. Nothing got past her and she never forgot a thing. She enjoyed conversation, offering her sense of humor or sharp wit. But still, Mama was reserved, but her words carried a heavy weight and were always regarded with respect. She indulged in life’s simple pleasures; she loved coffee in the morning and family visits. Mama was skilled in the kitchen, always able to put a meal on the table with few and simple ingre-dients. She always kept a bowl of masa on her table for fresh tortillas, and a pitcher of her delicious homemade tea in the refrigerator, ready for family and visitors. She and Daddy had their happiest times when their family was gathered together.
Mama was the true definition of a wife, a mother, and grandmother. She was the cornerstone of the family. Her role in this life was serving our Lord, loving her husband, and raising and guiding their children. She has fulfilled her purpose to the highest degree. Our sadness is relieved only in knowing that our Lord has prepared a place just for her in Heaven. But here, we will still reserve a place in our hearts and memories, that will forever be just for Mama. She will be very deeply missed. Her place as the matriarch of our family will never change, we will love her, and honor her forever and we thank God for the gift of our Mother.
