A.C. Black

A. C. Black, 82, of Waco, passed away early Friday morning, December 5, 2003, in a Waco hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, December 6, 2003, in the Waco Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel with Rev. Howard Martin, pastor of Cogdell Memorial United Methodist Church, officiating.

Burial will follow in Waco Memorial Park. Visitation with the family will be Saturday from 12 noon to 1:30 p.m. at OakCrest Funeral Home, 4520 Bosque.

A.C. was born October 29, 1921, near Kirk in Limestone County to William Acey Black and Sarah (Sadie) Harris Black. He grew up in Wortham in Freestone County.

During World War II, he proudly served in the U.S. Navy. He earned five battle stars for actions in the Pacific in 1942, and suffered the sinking of his ship, the USS Northampton, a heavy cruiser, at Guadalcanal. He earned three more battle stars for participating in invasions in Europe in 1943 and 1944. He was awarded a total of 12 medals, and as a Navy Reservist, he served in Japan during the Korean War.

On September 7, 1947, he married Rose Ingram in Mexia. They moved to Waco in 1949, where he attended Four C Business College. He was a contractor in the lumber and construction business in Waco until retiring in 1990.

He was a member of Cogdell Memorial United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Rose Black of Waco; two daughters, Cinda Kraft and her husband Bob of Irving, and Candace Greene and her husband Daryl of Mesquite; three grandchildren; and a half-sister, Georgia Mae Cline of Teague.
