Albert "Al" Barnes, 79, of Waco passed away on Tuesday, September 6, 2005 at his residence.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at OakCrest Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Curtis Holland officiating.

Burial will follow at Waco Memorial Park. Visitation will be Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at OakCrest Funeral Home, 4520 Bosque Blvd.

He was born in Aquilla to Alga Johnson and Lucile (Wright) Barnes. After returning to Waco from his service in the W.S. Navy (1944 to 1946), Al married JoAnne Crawford on December 31, 1947 in Waco. JoAnne preceded him in death on July 10, 2004. He retired from the U.S. Post Office in 1981 and worked the next 22 years at Hillcrest Hospital.

Over the years, he maintained as many as 37 lawns at one time. Al was an avid bowler all his life and also enjoyed playing golf. In 1987, Al was inducted into the Waco Bowlers Hall of Fame. He was a member of Western Heights Baptist Church and devoted many years of service in the Karem Shrine Patrol.

Al is survived by his daughter, Dorothy Barnes Young of Austin; son, John Barnes of Athens; granddaughters, Holly Conger, Cara, Mallory and Kelly Barnes, and Elizabeth Young; great-grandchildren, Joshua and Hanna Conger and Brennon Caraveau; two nieces and one nephew and his beloved doge, Sam.
Pallbearers will be George Heussner, James Miller, James Klein, Don Worthan, Robert Nixon and Bud Payne.
