Alice Hernandez, 74, of Waco, Texas, made her final journey home on Monday, October 30th, 2023. She entered this world on January 23, 1949, and was the oldest of ten children born to Mariano and Susana Garcia. She helped raise her younger siblings, a fact she proudly and constantly reminded them of. Alice began working at an early age and was a hard-working and dedicated employee. In fact, if possible, she would have worked until the day she left this earth. She seldom took a day off and tried to instill in her children the importance of hard work and saving money. Alice was a very caring individual. This was very evident in her role as a Human Resources professional. She spent many years assisting the employees at several of Waco’s large companies, Marathon Norco, Cardinal Health and Avery Dennison. She also made a mean bowl of menudo, to which most of her family would gladly attest.
She married the love of her life, John Hernandez, Sr., on September 13, 1969. They were married for nearly 50 years until John’s death in 2018. Together they had four children and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Alice was a kind and caring daughter, sister, mother, aunt, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was known to her grandchildren as” ‘Mar Mar”. She was a longtime member of Saint Francis Catholic Church, and her deep faith carried her through many trials and tribulations. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
She was preceded to heaven by her husband, John; her parents; brothers, Lawrence and Cresencio; and sister Mary Paz Garcia.
She leaves to cherish her memory four children, Johny Hernandez and wife, Georgina, Lawrence Hernandez and wife, Alicia, Becky Renee Hernandez, and Eric Hernandez, Sr., all of Waco; brothers, Richard Garcia and wife, Yolanda, Andrew Garcia and wife, Darlene; sisters, Jane Lara, Cathy Ramirez, and Gina Castillo, all of Waco, and Hope Colquitt and husband, Curly of Round Rock, TX; sisters-in-law, Lupe Chapa and husband, Sonny, Meme Hernandez and Virgie Hernandez of Waco; her uncle who was more like a brother, Cruz Garcia of Temple; aunts, Betty Patena and Pauline Rodriguez of Waco; 15 grandchildren; 12 great -grandchildren; numerous nephews and nieces; along with other family and loved ones. And finally, her faithful companion for the last years of her life, her Yorkie, Harley.
Visitation is Monday, November 6th at 6:00 pm followed by recitation of the Holy Rosary at 7:00pm at Oakcrest Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, November 7th at 10:00am at Saint Francis Catholic Church with Father Benjie as Celebrant. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery.
Pallbearers are her grandsons, AJ, Nathan, Trejohn, Eric Jr. and Matthew Hernandez; Roland Jr and De’Shaawn Sadler. Honorary pallbearers are grandsons, Andre and Zaviure Sadler.
The family would like to thank longtime family friend Nury Rodriguez and the 2nd floor ICU staff of Temple Scott and White Hospital for their kind and compassionate care of Alice.
Donations in Alice’s memory may be made to the American Heart Association or St. Jude’s Childrens Hospital.
