Alice Joy Nitschman

On 29 November 1933 Alice Nitschman was born as Alice Joy Henninger to Leslie and Alice Maedell in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Eighty seven years later, sometime during the hours before sunrise of 09 February 2021 she passed into the presence of her trusted Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Between those two dates Alice lived a life full of love and grace for those around her.

She is preceded in death by her parents Leslie and Alice Maedell Henninger, her two sisters Jeannie Donceel and Lesslie Roberts and two husbands David Underwood and Edward Nitschman.

Alice is survived by her children, David Underwood, his wife Susan Underwood, Denise Davis, wife of the late Dr. Scott Davis, Amy Bear and her husband Harvey Bear. She has six Grandchildren, Phillip Davis, Kathryn Harbin, Lesslie Chapa, Mary Ashley Twitty, Matthew Chapa and Charlie Davis, nine great grandchildren with one on the way.

Living most of her life in Houston, she faithfully pointed her children to Jesus Christ. Alice spent years studying the Bible even learning Hebrew so that she could more fully and accurately understand the scriptures. Many more years were spent reading and meditating on the the writings of Elizabeth Elliott, Amy Carmichael and many others.

She had a distinct gift for memorization which frequently gave rise to long quotations of Amy Carmichael. Alice was devoted to her family and wrote numerous poems using her children and grandchildren as subjects.

Known to her grandchildren as “Grammy”, she was generous to a fault and took great pleasure in indulging her “little ones”. A wonderful cook and hostess, she loved entertaining her family and friends. Alice possessed a bright smile and outgoing personality. She will be missed by all who knew her.
