Allen Schmedthorst

Allen August Schmedthorst, 89, of Robinson, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, June 13, 2015. A graveside memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, June 18, at Waco Memorial Park, officiated by Minister Kip Osborne.

Allen was born on August 16, 1925 to Theodore H. and Minnie (Korger) Schmedthorst. He lived and worked on the family farm in Mart, Texas and attended Riesel Schools until serving in the Army during WWII. Following the war, he returned to the farm he enjoyed so much. He married Nettie Marie Makowsky in 1946 and from that union, a daughter, Kathy Schmedthorst Morgan, was born. Allen began working for General Tire in 1955 and retired from there when the Waco plant was closed in 1985. In 1967 Allen married Naomi Butler who preceded him in death. In April of 2002, he married Mary Ostrom and they enjoyed 13 very loving years together until his death.

Allen enjoyed woodworking and was a very good imitator of many different animal sounds. He was longtime volunteer for Providence Hospital, most often in the CHF unit. It was there that he met Mary Ostrom and very soon after that meeting, he asked her to have dinner with him. After their marriage, they continued volunteering together until 2010. Allen was a dedicated member of Western Heights Baptist Church where he and Mary were active until the last several years.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Ostrom Schmedthorst of Robinson; daughter, Kathy Schmedthorst Morgan of Waco; step-children, Bill Ostrom and wife, D'Ann, of Round Rock, Steve Ostrom and wife, Fran, of Robinson, and Penny Ostrom of Robinson; four step-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren. Also left to cherish his memory are special family members Darrell and Kathy Owen of Robinson, Brad and Dora Betts of Hewitt, Michelle Bufford and husband, Jeff, and Danny Butler and wife, Kim, all of West Palm Beach, Florida, and Christy Howard and husband, Chuck, of Hewitt.

The family would like to thank previous caregiver Delois Jones for her wonderful and loving care and all of the current caregivers at St. Elizabeth's Place for being so kind. We are also very appreciative of the compassion provided Allen in his final hours by Providence Hospice.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or any charity of your choice.
