A.D. Holland, 89, passed away Wednesday, October 24, 2012, at Regent Care Center. Funeral services will be at Oak Crest Funeral Home Saturday, October 27th at 10:00 am with the Rev. Kip Osborne officiating.
Family visitation will be Friday the 26th from 5 to 7 pm at the funeral home. Interment will be at Ridgeview Memorial Park, Allen, Texas on Saturday, October 27th at 3:00 pm.
A.D. was born in Davis, Oklahoma on March 20, 1923 to the late Marion and Florida Autry Holland. He graduated from high school in Sulphur, Oklahoma in 1941. In 1943 at the age of nineteen, he enlisted in the U. S. Navy becoming one of the many “Greatest Generation” Americans who served in W.W. II. His three year tour of duty was in the South Pacific in W.W. II aboard the battleship USS Colorado. He participated in 13 engagements and witnessed the signing of the treaty ending the War at Tokyo Bay.
A.D. enrolled at North Texas State University in 1946 and received a B.S. Degree in 1949. He taught school and coached girls’ basketball prior to beginning a lifelong career in the life insurance industry in Waco in 1950. He was an agent, supervisor and a broker for 51 years, attended numerous seminars in Hawaii and Canada and other cities throughout the U.S. He was also officially enshrined as a member of the Hall of Fame and the million Dollar Round Table of The Bankers Life Company of Des Moines, Iowa.
A.D. was a charter member of the Civitan Club serving in various capacities for 32 years, including President. He also served 26 years in the Civil Air Patrol, Texas Wing, 12th Group, as a pilot in search and emergency flights for the Red Cross, and was a Squadron Commander, a Missions Coordinator and an Emergency Officer who flew 157 missions searching for aircraft and flying border patrol.
He was an enthusiastic outdoorsman who loved fishing and hunting, and an avid golfer, who was proud of his ‘13 holes in one,’
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six siblings: two brothers, J.C. Holland and Bill Holland; four sisters: Ruth Odom, Lucille Owens, Ozelle Abbott, and Jean Johnson.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Toye, of Waco; three sons, Layne and wife, Phillicia, of San Marcos, Texas; Kim and wife Terrie, of China Spring; Greg Holland of China Spring; 5 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren; a sister, Jo Stewart and husband, Jim Stewart of Houston, and numerous nieces and nephews.
