His Life

Arthur, whom friends knew as Jiggs, was born April 28, 1920 near the farming community of Chilton, son of John and Mary Elizabeth Copeland. Jiggs grew up living the life of a country boy. He enjoyed hunting with a slingshot, reading adventure novels and roughhousing with his brothers when he wasn't working in the fields. He told stories of traveling to West Texas to pick cotton.

Jiggs served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He served most of his hitch in London, England, before his discharge in November 1945.

Upon his return to the United States, he attended watchmaking school in Waco. He later discovered an aptitude for carpentry work and applied his craft to repair and remodeling jobs in Waco and Fort Worth.

In 1948, Jiggs married the love of his life, the former Tommie Ruth Mosley, a telephone switchboard operator. Tommie died in 1986 after a long battle with rheumatoid arthritis that kept her confined to home. They had a son, Michael, in 1956 while living in Gholson.

Jiggs worked for many years for Robert Knight Construction Co., gaining a reputation as a fine finish carpenter. He helped build some of the finest homes in the Hewitt and Woodway areas.

His Later Years
In his later years, Jiggs was the most happiest reading his Bible, watching a good football game on TV, and visiting with his granddaughters, Claudia, whom he called Claudie, and Chloe-Kate, whom he fondly referred to as Tooter.

Jiggs was a member of the Turning Point Assembly of God Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, George (Dude) Copeland.

Survivors include his son, Mike Copeland and his wife, Claudell; granddaughters, Claudia and Chloe-Kate, all of Waco; brothers, R.E. (Rusty) Copeland of Robinson and Jack Copeland of Whitt; sisters, Laverne Birkes of Waco and Frances Tadlock of Rowlett; and a host of nieces and nephews.
