Barbara "Bobbie" Lee Zehrbach McCoy, 87, died peacefully December 8, 2012, at Providence Hospital in Waco, Texas with her children beside her. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, David McCoy.
Bobbie Lee was born in Fayetteville, North Carolina on August 28, 1925.
She grew up in Hampton, Virginia, the only child of Fred and Pencie Lee Zehrbach. She graduated from Hampton High School in 1942, and Mary Washington College in 1946. Following her graduation from Mary Washington College, Bobbie Lee worked as a stewardess with American Airlines, during which time she met and married David W. McCoy of Chicago, Illinois, the love of her life for 51 years.
After the death of her husband, she moved from their home in Chicago, settling in Waco to be nearer her children. Her son, Paul McCoy is a professor of fine arts at Baylor University. Eldest son Fred McCoy manages the properties and holdings in Dayton, near Houston. Youngest child and only daughter, Katie McCoy Brausen is a freelance journalist from her home in Waco.
Bobbie Lee spread warmth and dispensed smiles to all those fortunate enough to cross her path. The family is planning a memorial service in the new year. In lieu of flowers, friends are invited to donate to the Carter Center, a non-profit organization founded by former U.S. president Jimmy Carter with waging global peace, fighting disease, and building hope as its tenets.
