Benedict Carter, 52, of Houston, formerly of Nacogdoches, died Saturday, September 6, 2008 at his residence.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Thursday, September 11, 2008 at St. Louis Catholic Church with Msgr. Mark Deering officiating. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Rosary will be at OakCrest Funeral Home at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 10, 2008.

Nathaniel "Benedict" Carter was born on April 21, 1956 in Waco, Texas, the youngest of four children born to Raeford J. Carter and Lillian Nicosia Carter. He was an altar boy at St. Mary's Catholic Church while attending elementary school there.

He worked in the family business, Nicosia Shoe Repair Service, during his teens and graduated from Reicher Catholic High School in 1974.

He moved to Nacogdoches to attend Stephen F. Austin University and made his home there. He was employed for 10 years at the SFA Student Center.

He was then employed at Wal-Mart in Nacogdoches for 16 years. He received his certification as an optical lab technician and worked in the optical dispensary there. A year ago he retired due to health concerns and moved to Houston to be near family.
Throughout his life Benedict was very enthusiastic about cooking.

For friends and family he created a cookbook of his recipes as well as family favorites. He enjoyed traveling and was especially fond of visiting New Orleans.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister-in-law, Theresa Carter.

He is survived by his sister, Bernadette McQuaig and husband Alan of Jacksonville, Florida; his two brothers, Jerome Carter and wife Susan of Houston, and Raeford E. Carter and wife Charlotte of Woodway.

Also surviving are godchildren Stacey Carter of San Antonio and Christopher McQuaig of Jacksonville, Florida as well as his nine other nephews and nieces.

Pallbearers will be Brad Carter, Matt Carter, Jason Carter, Steve James, Bryan Anderson and Jack Stivers.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
