Bernard was born January 7, 1930 in New York City to John and Mary (Caldwell) Ahern. He married Katharina E. Titl on November 26, 1955 at Burnley, England.
He joined the U.S. Army and served for 28 years before retiring as a Warrant Officer 2. He and his wife moved to Waco in 1978 and he served as the Food Service Director of ARA Services at Baylor University until retiring 22 years later.
Bernard was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church, and was a Free Mason and York Rite Mason. He loved history, especially the Civil War and early Roman times. He was interested in geography and loved to travel, especially in Europe. He was fascinated by automobiles, and could easily recognize the year and model styles of any car. He enjoyed working in food service, especially in planning, arranging, and catering food events.
Survivors include his wife, Katharina; a son, Michael Ahern; and two daughters, Mary Ahern and Heidi Marcum and husband, Greg of Waco.
The family especially thanks the Providence Hospital staff, and their friends and neighbors for their love and care during Bernard's illness.
