Bert Mercer

Bert Lewis Mercer, 89, of Woodway, Texas, passed away April 23, 2022. He was born November 17, 1932, in Mt. Pleasant, Texas, to William Ashley Mercer and Eva Harper Mercer. He married the love of his life, Norma Jean “Jeanie” Wilson Mercer, on September 28, 1951. They were married for 66 years before her death in 2017.

Mr. Mercer is survived by two sons, John Mark Mercer of Waco, David Ashley Mercer and wife Sylvia of Orlando, FL; one daughter, Amy Beth Mercer Enoch of Denton, TX; beloved sons-in-law Roger Daw and wife Marcia, and David Enoch; grandchildren: Cheverly Long and husband Larry, Daniel Mercer and Maryam, Jeannie Daw Martinez and husband Saul, Emily Daw Boyle and husband Aaron, Jenith Mercer, Holly Mercer, Mary Enoch and Leah Enoch; one great-grandchild, Autumn Louther; and many extended family members and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his sisters Bobbie Martin and Billie Vinson, and his daughter Mary Annette Mercer Daw.

Mr. Mercer was a long-time Church of Christ pulpit minister, preaching in cities all over Texas for more than 70 years. This included MacArthur Park (San Antonio), Golf Course Road (Midland), and Crestview (Waco). Most recently and for the longest period, he preached at Brookview Church of Christ here in Waco. For many years, he also served as chaplain for the Hewitt Police Department. He loved teaching the Word of God, and was also a talented personal work minister, diligently working to care for members of the churches he served. Above all, Mr. Mercer loved his Lord.

Around town, Mr. Mercer was known for his long walks and for riding large motorcycles. Walking through the mall, he was often hailed by shopkeepers, saying, “Hi, Preacher!”

Mr. Mercer, affectionately known as Daddy to his kids and Pop to his grandkids, also loved his family. He was never shy to show his silly side, and dinners around the kitchen table were always filled with laughter. In later years, he was devoted to taking care of his wife as her health declined. And he was always only a phone call away if anyone was in need.

The family offers deepest gratitude to all who have ministered to the Mercer family over the years, providing love, prayers, and comfort, as well as practical help such as rides to the doctor or helping in the Mercer home. The friendships built throughout the years have been an enormous blessing to our family.
