Betty Jo Dickens
June 24, 1930 – March 19, 2009
Betty Jo Dodson Dickens, 78, of Waco, passed away at 1:45 p.m. Thursday, March 19, at a local care center after a short illness.
Services will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, March 21, at Grace Temple Baptist Church with the Rev. David Brown and the Rev. Van Vowel officiating. Burial will follow at Waco Memorial Park under the direction of OakCrest Funeral Home of Waco.
Betty was born June 24, 1930 in Rosebud. She attended school in Rosebud until her family moved to Waco in 1941. She attended Gurley Elementary School, South Junior High School, and graduated from Waco High School in 1947.
She worked as church secretary at Turner Street Baptist Church and Smith Furniture Manufacturing where she retired in 2004 after over 45 years of service.
Betty's strong Christian faith and dedication to her church sustained her throughout her life. Being the oldest child, she inspired her brothers and sisters to develop their faith and attend Sunday School and church. She and her husband Jack were active in ministering to children and teens at Grace Temple Baptist Church. They brought up their daughter, Cindy, and son, Kyle, in a loving Christian home. After Jack's death in 1975, Betty continued her lifelong quest to teach the Word to children at Grace Temple.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Milton Dickens, Jr.; mother and father, Lillie Mae Schlemmer Dodson and Joseph Marion Dodson Jr.; brother, George Marshall Dodson; and daughter-in-law, April Ann Hutchinson Dickens.
Survivors include her daughter, Cindy Mitchell and husband, Dick; son, Kyle Dickens; grandchildren, Justin Lawless and wife, Tara, Jeffrey Lawless, and Kayla, Ryan, Kyle, Jr. Brianna, Tracen, Destany and Hailey Dickens. She is also survived by a brother, Harold Dodson and wife, Carolyn; sisters, Margie Good and husband, George; Carie Jean Buck; Merle Neumann and husband, Leonard; Kathy Baulos, and Pat Pophin; and many nieces and nephews. She leaves behind many lifelong friends from Turner Street Baptist Church, Grace Temple, Smith Furniture, and Stilwell Retirement Residence.
Pallbearers will be Leonard Neumann, George Good, James Lawless, Bob Unger, Ben Bullard, and Doyle Motley.
Honorary pallbearers will be Olin Kornegay, Charlie Matthews, Ray Maxwell, Ray Johnson, Paul Primrose, and Brandon Bianchi.
