Betty Jean Garner Solomon, 80, of Waco, passed away Thursday, March 27, 2008.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 1, at OakCrest Funeral Home with Msgr. Mark Deering officiating. Burial will follow in Waco Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday at OakCrest Funeral Home, 4520 Bosque Blvd. A slide show of her life will be shown during visitation and online at www.oakcrestwaco.com.

Betty was born in Waco to Walter and Opal (Reed) Smith. She graduated from Waco High School, Class of 1945, and later graduated from 4C College in Waco. She married Bill Garner in 1948, and they traveled extensively during his military time. He died in 1986. She married Melvin Solomon on November 29, 1995.

She worked as a telephone operator for Southwestern Bell Telephone for many years, was a Red Cross Volunteer and a member of St. Louis Catholic Church. She cherished taking care of her family, and loved to cook for them. She especially enjoyed being a devoted mother and grandmother. She never met a stranger and enjoyed talking and visiting with people, and she loved her animals.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Bill Garner; sister, Helen Louise Smith, and brother, Raymond Smith.

She is survived by her husband, Melvin; daughter, Suzanne McNiel and husband, Tracy of Waco; grandchildren, Derek, Dylan, Drew and Desiree McNiel; sister, Viola Jones of Wichita Falls; and two brothers, Alfred Smith and wife, Lynette of Waco, and Ed Smith and wife, Joanne of Hewitt.
