Billy Joe Bone, age 74, passed away Saturday morning, July 14, at home. Graveside services will be at 11 am Tuesday at Woodbury Cemetery in Hillsboro. The family will be receiving visitors at OakCrest Funeral Home on Monday from 6 – 8 pm.
Bill was born September 21, 1932, to L.B. and Myrtle Hanna (Heath) Bone in Lorena, Texas. He attended Lorena schools as a youth. On June 6, 1964, he married Laquita Rue Bone. They were married for 40 years until her death on August 3, 2004. Bill loved the Lord and had attended Cottonwood Baptist Church in Cottonwood, Texas. Bill served in the U.S. Navy from 1950-1954 and proudly served in the Korean War. He was always proud to fly the American flag and the Texas flag in his front yard year round and quickly replaced one when it began to show sign of wear. He believed in his country and did not take for granted its freedoms. After the death of his wife, Quita, he loved and cared for their dog Trooper who was his constant companion until Trooper's death. He then got a miniature Dachshund named Punkin that deep him busy and entertained. He kept food and water outside for the wild birds and loved to watch them. The stray cats were welcomed too as long as they left his chickens alone. He also loved to feed his chickens and had them spoiled by tossing breadcrumbs from the porch every day at their home of thirteen years. He would call, they would come, and it pleased him greatly. Bill never missed a chance to call his family or friends to give them an update on his dog, the chickens, or any critter on his place.
He enjoyed talking about the old days when he was a boy growing up with 6 smaller brothers and sisters. Blue was his favorite color. His parents made him quit school at an early age to help support the family they had. He was never bitter about this and always said, "It was just the way it was".
His parents, one brother and his loving wife preceded Bill in death.
Survivors include his daughters, Donna R. Thorne and husband Ronnie of Lorena; sons, Burgess George Cole III and wife Carole of Austin; Tom Dee Cole and wife Pam of Wichita Falls, grandchildren, Robert Andrew "Andy" Thorne of Rosenthal; Tommy Dee Cole of Carrolton; Amanda Cole of Wichita Falls; Jennifer Mierl and husband Seth of Cedar Park; Caitlin Farley of Austin; Rebecca Cole of Houston; three brothers, Glen and wife Linda of McGregor, Fred of Waco, Kenneth and wife Gail of Richardson; and two sisters, Betty and husband Gail Murdoch of Olgebesy and Shirley and husband Bill Owens near Lake Livingston.
