Bobbie Joe Tanner, 78, of Waco, passed away on Monday, July 2, 2007 in a Waco hospital. Graveside services with military honors will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Waco Memorial Park with Sammy Mangrum officiating.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the OakCrest Funeral Home, 4520 Bosque Blvd. A memorial video honoring his life will be shown during the visitation.

Bobbie Joe was born October 11, 1928 in Lacy-Lakeview to Walter Clee and Mary Mae (Malone) Tanner, and lived in this area most of his life. He left Waco High School to join the Navy in 1946 during WWII and was stationed in the Marianna Islands. When he returned, he attended 4-C College and earned his GED. He married Alta Fae Oxner on December 31, 1953 in Waco.

He joined the US Air Force in 1954 and was stationed in Alaska. He enjoyed being a HAM radio operator, and while stationed in Alaska he volunteered during the big earthquake there in 1964.

After military service, he worked in civil service at Fort Hood from 1966 to 1981. He was a member of Disabled American Veterans and the Church of Christ.

A man who loved to fly, he built and piloted five different experimental aircraft and restored a Piper which he flew. He was a member of Local Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 59 and the National Chapter in Oshkosh, WI. Later when he gave up the big planes, he flew miniature airplanes with his family and friends at Wings of Christ in Axtell.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Bill Tanner; and two half sisters, Faye Connoway and Estelle Vickery.

He is survived by his wife, Alta Tanner; son, Don Tanner of Waco; two daughters, Karen Urbanovsky and husband, Ted of Aquilla, and Anita White and husband, Chuck of Axtel; sister, Janelle Tanner of Denison; grandchildren, Matthew and Melissa Tanner of Crawford, and Stacy Groce and husband, Troy of Bellmead, and great-grandchildren, Joshua and Skyler Groce of Bellmead, and many nieces, nephews and flying buddies.

Pallbearers will be W.D. Brown, Homer Ricks, Jim Hand, Johnny Hollick, Greg Davis, and Ernie Wiedemann.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity or church of your choice.
