Bryant Edward Burleson, 51, of China Spring, passed away unexpectedly at home and was pronounced dead at a local hospital on Thursday, Nov. 3, 2005, the same day as his only son's 30th birthday.

A celebration of Bryant's life is set for 10 a.m. Monday at the OakCrest Funeral Home in Waco, located at 4520 Bosque in Waco across from the H.O.T. Coliseum.

Graveside services will be conducted near his childhood home at 2 p.m. at the LaSalle Cemetery near Groesbeck. The Rev. Richard Sellers, pastor of Oak Grove Baptist in China Spring, will officiate.

Bryant was born Dec. 26, 1953 in San Antonio to Major (U.S. Army, retired) Derwood E. "Ed" Burleson of Groesbeck and the late Dorothy Marie (Bush) Burleson of Corsicana. His step-mother is Susan R. Burleson (U.S. Army Captain, retired) of Groesbeck.

He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas, with a major in criminal justice in 1975. He was a licensed, Level II, private investigator and was owner/manager of Burleson Investigations since 1984.

Bryant was a devoted member of Oak Grove Baptist Church in China Spring. He grew up in the First Baptist Church of Groesbeck and became a Christian at the age of 13. Although his first career goal was to enter the ministry, that plan gave way to a love of law enforcement and later evolved to a career as a pilot.

Bryant spent the first portion of his career in criminal justice, first as a probation officer with McLennan County Juvenile Probation, and later with the Texas Board of Pardons and Parole as an adult parole officer. He also served as an investigator with the Texas Attorney General's Office.

But Bryant's passion was soaring above the clouds at 25,000 feet. Bryant received his private pilot's license and later received ATP, AMEL/CFI-I, AMSEL and A-IGI ratings. He was employed as a corporate pilot by Home State Insurance Group of Waco. Bryant loved his job. It gave him the chance to fly often to locations near and far, and he was especially fond of his bosses, John and Harriett Davis of Waco.

He even flew "just for fun" and owned his own plane. His other hobbies included hunting and gun-collecting, and he enjoyed being surrounded by friends and family. He loved the outdoors and animals, especially his faithful but incorrigible cocker spaniel, Scout.

Bryant is survived by his loving wife of 12 years, Debby Burleson; his only son, 2nd Lt. Clint Edward Burleson, U.S. Army, Aviation, and Clint's family, including wife Tiffany and grandchildren, Brody and Reagan Burleson and Chandler Stuberg. Also Bryant's twin sister, Dana Renschler of Waco, and his older sister, Casanda "Cassy" Key of Aransas Pass and Waco.

Other survivors include his former stepson and Clint's beloved step-brother, Chance Vrba of Austin; brothers-in-law, Richie Renschler of Waco and Larry C. Key of Aransas Pass; maternal uncles and aunts, Earl and Virginia Bush of Corsicana, and Gwynn and Jimmie Nell Sutton of Irving. His nieces are Skyler Renschler of Waco and Jasa Jerilyn Jordan of Austin. Cousins include Janet Hoskins of Temple, Roxie Davis of Dale, Bruce Burleson of North Richland Hills, as well as Kim Sutton of Richardson and Karon Sutton of Irving.

He adored his in-laws, Glen and Marcia White of Fairfield.

Bryant was preceded in death by one daughter, Ashley, and his mother, Dorothy Marie Bush of Corsicana.

Pallbearers will be Jeff, Link and Nicky Anderson; Jimmy Goodrich; Mike Landrum; David McClaren; Kim Sutton and Doug White. Groesbeck High School's class of '72 has been designated as a corps of honorary pallbearers.

Memorials may be sent to Oak Grove Baptist Church, 614 Oak Grove Loop, China Spring, TX 76633 or to Waco Center for Youth, 3501 N. 19th St., Waco, TX 76708.
