Carolyn Jeannette Weathersbee Lara-Braud, 84 years old, was born January 4, 1940 and passed December 21, 2024. Carolyn fell in her bedroom during the night of December 20th and was ambulanced to Scott and White in Waco where she passed from her injuries on the 21st at about 4:00 pm.
Carolyn was the second daughter born to Claude H. Weathersbee and Nelda Modena Weathersbee of Waco, Texas. She graduated from Waco High School in 1958, 4th in her class and received a Rotary Scholarship for $500, which she used at Delmar College in Corpus Christi, Texas for 2 years before going to UT in Austin, Texas to complete her PHD in Biochemistry in 1969. She was instrumental in the research of DNA which was her dissertation project for the PHD degree. Her works are published.
Carolyn married Jorge Lara-Braud in 1970, moved to New Jersey, and taught 7th grade students. She divorced Jorge Laura-Braud in 1973. She received an offer from the University of Iowa where she taught Home Economics and Nutrition. Later she occupied the position of chairperson of that department.
Carolyn retired from the University of Iowa after 34 years of service and moved back to Waco, Texas where she lived with her mother and 2 sisters. She loved cats as they kept her company. Carolyn also loved gardening, crocheting, reading and doing crossword puzzles to keep her mind sharp while watching TV.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her mother, who lived to be 100 years, her father, and her oldest sister, Phyllis. Survivors are her two younger sisters, Armeda Jost and Teresa Weber. Carolyn was childless, but she treated everyone like they were her own. She was greatly loved.
