Carrie Hoffman

Carrie Helen "Joy" Hoffman, 88, of Waco and formerly of Gatesville, passed away Monday, December 6, 2010. Visitation with her family will be from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday, December 13, 2010 at the First United Methodist Church in Gatesville. In addition, a second time to share memories and thoughts with her family will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday at OakCrest Funeral Home, 4520 Bosque Blvd.

Mrs. Hoffman was born June 19, 1922 in Albuquerque, New Mexico to James Calvin Oakley and Frances Myrtle Wren. She married Claude C. Hoffman June 29, 1941 in Lubbock. A graduate of Texas Tech, Mrs. Hoffman was an educator and taught home economics and special education. During her career, she taught school in Hamilton, McGregor, West and later in Gatesville. She was a member of FHA, Texas State Teacher's Association and the United Methodist Women.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Ruth Godwin; and her brother, Dyar Oakley.

Mrs. Hoffman is survived by her husband, Claude; daughters, Sue Benson of Springfield, Virginia and Cathy Dawson and husband, David of Provo, Utah; sons, Chris Hoffman and wife, Pam of Waco, Cal Hoffman and wife, Gena of North Richland Hills and John Mark Hoffman and wife, Anna of Waco; her sister, Anna Jim Hardegree and husband, Tom of Ft. Worth; her seven grandchildren, Bryce Dawson and wife, Melinda, Devin Dawson and Andrew, Kelvin, Haley, Abigail and Alex Hoffman; and three great grandchildren, Dayna, Sarah and Ryan Dawson.

In lieu of floral arrangements, memorials may be directed in Mrs. Hoffman's memory to Caritas or your local food pantry.
