Charles A. Jones, 67, of McGregor, passed away Sunday, October 24, 2010. A private family graveside service at Oakwood Cemetery will be followed by an 11 a.m. Memorial service Thursday, October 28, 2010 at Highland Baptist Church.
Charlie was born February 21, 1943 in Waco to Charles S. Jones and Helen Gooch Jones. He graduated from University High School in 1961 and attended the Texas Highway Patrol Academy and upon graduation, served as a Texas Highway Patrol Officer. In 1965, he married Sara Seley in Waco. During his service as a State Trooper, Charlie attended Baylor University. He graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1971. He then began work as Development Officer at Baylor and after 30 years of employment, retired as Senior Development Officer. He held many offices and served on the boards of several organizations including Executive Director of the Baylor Thai Foundation, Executive Director of the Baylor Bear Foundation from 1987 until 1993, member of Omicron Delta Epsilon, President's Club and Baylor Alumni Association Annual Membership. Under Charlie's leadership, he directed and transformed the Baylor Bear Club into the organization now known as the Baylor Bear Foundation. He was also a member of Baylor Nationwide in the 70's. He loved Baylor athletics, especially following the Lady Bears and was a supporter of the Women's Basketball Excellence Fund. Charlie's greatest accomplishment and what gave him the most joy was directing and steering the fundraising efforts for the Grant Teaff Plaza at Floyd Casey Stadium.
Charlie was a member of Highland Baptist Church for 29 years and served as a Deacon, Sunday school teacher and a College group leader.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Charlie is survived by his wife of 45 years, Sara Seley Jones; daughter, Ashley Jones; his mother, Helen Jones; sister, Emilie Jones Whitaker and husband, Wayne; three nephews, Patrick Whitaker and wife, Michelle, Michael Whitaker and wife, Je'Anne and Matthew Whitaker; and great nieces and nephews, Morgan, Jackson and Georgia.
Pallbearers will be Wayne Whitaker, Patrick Whitaker, Michael Whitaker, Matthew Whitaker, David Lockhart and Don Woodliff.
Memorials may be directed to St. Jude's Children's Hospital or to Fuzzy Friends.
