Dan E. Mayfield, Jr. died Wednesday, January 16, 2013, peacefully and with dignity after a lengthy illness. Following a private burial at Oakwood Cemetery, a Memorial Service will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 21 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church with the Rev. Chuck Treadwell officiating. Visitation with Dan’s family will follow at the church.
Dan was born December 17, 1934, in Waco to Dan E. Mayfield and Beulah May McGuire Mayfield both of Waco. He grew up in Waco attending Sanger Avenue Elementary, West Junior High and Waco High School, graduating in 1952. Dan met his bride, Beverly Jane Frierson, of Waco and they married August 10, 1956.
He attended Baylor University graduating with a BBA in 1959. His passion for practicing law began while attending Baylor School of Law graduating in 1961. He earned the title Texas Attorney & Counselor of Law in 1962, after which he began his legal career as an attorney with the Waco firm of Jones, Boyd, Westbrook & Lovelace. Dan earned his Juris Doctor from Baylor School of Law in 1969. He was a partner in the law firm Sheehy, Lovelace and Mayfield where he enjoyed a legal career practicing defensive civil trial law until his retirement in 2007.
Dan was avidly committed to serving the Waco community through many organizations and his beloved church. He was King of the Waco Cotton Palace in 1999, served on the Waco Cotton Palace Executive Committee as legal counsel, Vestry member and Junior Warden of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Director of Waco Habitat for Humanity, President of the Waco Hippodrome, Director of the Hedonia Club of Waco, Lake Air Little League, President Western League, Waco Jaycees and as a Director of the Fish Pond Country Club. Dan also served as the State Bar of Texas Director 8th District, McLennan County Bar Association President, and the Texas Life Insurance Company Board of Directors.
Dan enjoyed attending Baylor University football, basketball and baseball games, boating on Lake Waco, dove hunting and fishing, watching Little League baseball games, vacationing in Port Aransas, cooking on the smoker or in the kitchen, and any activity or event involving his family and valued friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dan and Beulah Mayfield.
Dan is survived by his wife of 56 years, Beverly Mayfield; daughter, Melisa Mayfield Bennett and husband, Jamey; son, Dan E. Mayfield, III and wife, Danni; grandchildren, Morgan Crosthwait Bennett, Daniel E. Mayfield, IV, and Matthew S. Grayson; brother, James Mayfield of Waco; sister, Jeannette Mayfield Kelley and husband, John of Belton; and brother, Judge Alan Mayfield and wife, Robin of China Spring; many cousins including, John D. Mayfield, III and wife, Beth of Waco, Ann Mayfield Burton and husband, Alan of Houston; and numerous nephews and nieces.
Pallbearers will be Daniel E. Mayfield, IV, Jamey Bennett, Clifton Bennett, Kenneth Bennett, Robin Bennett, and Marshall Owen. Honorary pallbearers are the attorneys with Sheehy, Lovelace and Mayfield and the Knights of the Round Table Monday lunch bunch at Uncle Dan’s.
The family extends their sincere appreciation to Dr. Artie Sudan, Regent Care Center care-givers and staff, and to Bluebonnet Hospice.
