Darla Rae Penner
July 10, 1972 – November 14, 2015
Darla Rae Penner, 43, of Waco, passed away peacefully on November 14, 2015, following a long, courageous battle with cancer. Visitation with the family will occur from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 17, at OakCrest Funeral Home, 4520 Bosque Blvd. in Waco. Afterward, a funeral procession will depart for Oakwood Cemetery, where Pastor John Taylor will officiate a graveside service at 2:30 p.m.
Darla was born July 10, 1972, in Santa Anna, Texas. She spent most of her early years in Brown County, where she was very active in the Seventh Day Adventist Church community, attended their school, and was a member of Pathfinders. She moved to Waco at age 18 and studied at McLennan Community College. Darla made friends easily and was always putting the needs of others ahead of her own. Until she became disabled, she was very active in groups with friends and enjoyed her volunteer work with Compassion Ministries.
Darla was preceded in death by her grandparents, Raymond and Othel Egbert; father-in-law, Daniel Penner; and sister-in-law, Julie McMahon.
She is survived by her husband, Ted Penner; her mother, Lana Rae (Egbert) Dodgen; her brother, Phillip Egbert Dodgen; and brother, Jackie Dodgen and wife, Jamie. She is also survived by her parents-in-law, Mary Beth and Don McMahon; brother-in-law, Will Penner and wife, Christine; and brother-in-law, Mark McMahon and wife, Teresa. She very much enjoyed her nieces and nephews, Bill Trammell, Theresa and Adam Jackson, Nicholas Dodgen, Alexandria Dodgen, Jarett McMahon, Devin Penner, Austin Bronstad, Nikki Penner, Daniel Penner, Bethany Penner; and great-niece and nephew, Patrishia and Tommy Jackson.
The family wishes to express its appreciation to all Darla’s special hospice caregivers and to the many friends who have supported her along the way.
