Darlene Ellison Johnson
April 14, 1954 – September 8, 2015
Darlene Ellison Johnson, of Waco, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, September 8, 2015. Funeral services will be at 11:00 am Monday, September 14 at First Baptist Church of Woodway with Rev. Terry Graham officiating. Burial will follow at Waco Memorial Park. Visitation will be Sunday, September 13 from 2 – 4 pm at OakCrest Funeral Home, 4520 Bosque Blvd.
Darlene was born on April 14, 1954. She graduated from Richfield High School in 1972 and graduated magna cum laude from Baylor in 1976. She had just begun her 40th year of employment as Hallsburg ISD’s 6th grade teacher. On July 14, 1979 she married Gary Johnson.
We will miss her smile, laughter, compassion, grace under fire, constant encouragement, quiet confidence and her ability to accomplish ANY task at hand (regardless of circumstances or obstacles). She dearly loved her family, friends, church, Hallsburg (students, principals, staff and the community), the extended Midway baseball family, her beloved next door neighbor, J.D., her special church buddies, Bill and Doris Bowen, her best friend and co-worker Patti Dingrando, her first principal and special mentor, Wayne McKamie, her doctors (especially Dr. Carlos Kier, Dr. James Copeland, Dr. Charles Gibney and the San Antonio transplant doctors/team), and her third Hallsburg principal and “hero” Jan Hungate (who graciously donated a kidney to Darlene ten years ago) and the list goes on and on. But most of all, Darlene dearly loved her God and her savior Jesus Christ!
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jim and Marie Ellison; granddaughter, Emlynn Johnson; and mother-in-law, Rosemary Adair.
She is survived by her husband, Gary Johnson; son, Greg Johnson and wife, Tara of Evadale; daughter, Stacey Johnson of Arlington; sister, Linda Roberson and husband, Richard of Waco; sister-in-law. Jan Newsome and husband, Creech of Houston; two grandchildren; and several nephews and cousins.
To honor Darlene’s commitment to Hallsburg School (and her pride in watching her kids compete in athletic events), memorial gifts may be made to Hallsburg ISD/Darlene Johnson Memorial Fund to purchase items for the playground.
