Deacon Joseph T. Potter, 81, of Hewitt, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2014. Mass of Christian Burial will be concelebrated 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, at St. Jerome Catholic Church by Bishop Joe S. Vásquez. Burial with military honors will follow at Chapel Hill Cemetery.

The rosary will be 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 21, at OakCrest Funeral Home, 4520 Bosque Boulevard. Visitation with the family will start at 7 p.m.

Deacon Joe dedicated his life to faithfully serving God, country, family, friends, students, and strangers. After a 20-year career in the U.S. Air Force, he completed the first deaconate class in the Diocese of Austin in 1984. Deacon Joe served several Waco area parishes for 32 years before retiring from St. Jerome in 2005. He became a 1st degree Knight in 1962 and a 4th Degree Sir Knight in 1979.

He also served as school teacher, prison chaplain, Little League coach, and hospice volunteer.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Gwendolyn Good Potter, and his mother, Ada Potter.

He is survived by three sons, Dennis Potter and wife Venina, Paul Potter, and Mark Potter; daughter, Cathy Lewis and fiancé, Brian Eubanks; grandchildren, Paul, Holly and husband Shawn McDowell, Michelle, Stephanie, Rodney, Jaclynn, and Bridget; and great-grandchildren, Jaylyn, Ellie, Jacob, Erin, Pepper, and Kiplin.

The Knights of Columbus will serve as honor guards and pallbearers.
