Kenneth Dink Hunnicutt was born on October 9, 1928, to Tom and Nona Hunnicutt in Girard, TX. He was one of eight siblings with six brothers and one sister. He spent his boyhood on his family farm, playing basketball and picking cotton.
On June 20, 1948, he married his childhood sweetheart, Anna Lorene Phipps of Girard, and the two moved to Lubbock. They had a son and daughter, and Dink spent his career working for the Southwestern Bell Telephone Company and retired in 1985.
Dink and Anna moved to Waco in 1973 and joined First Baptist Church of Woodway. Dink became a deacon in 1956 in Lubbock and continued to serve in that role at First Woodway for over 40 years. He was known for his hospitality and ability to befriend anyone. He was always known to be early at his door on Sunday mornings, greeting guests and passing out church bulletins. He was also known as the chicken man - the one who found moving vans all over town and delivered fried chicken meals to people new to their homes and the community. The meal always came with an invitation to church, as Dink loved his church family and served in anyway possible. He also served for many years with the Waco Kiwanis Club.
Dink was best known as “Papaw” to his grandkids and great grandkids and to all their friends. His home was always a safe place, he was able to fix anything, had a good listening ear and a silly sense humor that calmed every baby and made everyone of any age, laugh. In all this, the way he loved his family will be remembered most.
He and Anna attended every event their grandchildren and great grandchildren were a part of whether sports games, concerts, church musicals, awards ceremonies, etc. Anything the kids were doing, they wanted to be there. Dink and Anna visited everyone they knew who was sick in the hospital. They waited in many hospital waiting rooms for grandchildren and great grandchildren to be born. Dink and Anna perfected the art of showing up for people they loved. His very presence will be deeply missed.
Dink is survived by his wife of 73 years, Anna Hunnicutt; his son, Ken Hunnicutt and wife, Becky; grandson, Ryan Hunnicutt; granddaughter, Keri McDonald and husband, Tim; great grandchildren, Isaac, Will, and Davy McDonald, of Tyler, TX.; daughter, Janet Lindsey and husband, Tom; granddaughters, Kylie Higgins and husband, Ronny, Annesa Scott and husband, Gabe, Emily Field and husband, Tommy; his great grandchildren, Hudson, Avery, Eli, and Josiah Higgins; Harper, Scarlett, and Lilly Scott; Crew, Hayes. and Jett Field, of Waco.
