Edith Downing
November 5, 1925 – May 19, 2006

Edith Alexander Downing, 80, of Waco, passed away Friday, May 19, 2006 in her home. Services will be at 10:30 am Tuesday in the OakCrest Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Pamela Dykehouse officiating. Burial will follow in the Valley Mills Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday at OakCrest Funeral Home, 4520 Bosque. A memorial video of her life will be shown during both the visitation and the service.

Edith was born November 5, 1925 in Fairview, Texas to Edgar Augusta and Maud (Jaynes) Alexander. She went to Fairview School. At the age of 17, she married 19-year-old Joe Downing. They were married for almost 62 years.

Edith was a loving daughter, wife, and mother. She cared tenderly for her parents for many years before they passed away, and she put all her heart and soul into caring for her children and grandchildren. She made sure that each of them knew that they were loved, and that there was nothing she would not do for them. She was nicknamed "Mimi" by her grandchildren and was called that by most people. Nothing pleased her more than to be surrounded by her family and her pets. In later years she was plagued with many health problems, but she faced them all courageously.

Edith was preceded in death by her mother in 1989; her father in 1990; her husband, Joe, in 2005, and her brother, Edd Alexander in 2003.

Surviving are her son, Glenn Downing and wife, Laura Beck of Waco; daughters, Jann Shropshire and husband, Chris of Rosebud, Texas; and Dianne Downing Moore and husband, Jim of Waco; grandchildren, Jennifer Hill and husband, Charles, Lauren Alexandra Moore (named in honor of Edith's maiden name), and Christopher Shropshire; and great-grandchildren, Mi'Kayla, Michael, Seth, and Trey.

The family wishes to thank Visiting Angels for providing the best possible care for Edith during the last two years so that she could enjoy life living in her own home. The family is grateful for Alex, Vivian, Connie, Rosie, Peggy, Sherae, Diane, Laura, Phyllis, and all the other wonderful caregivers that became a part of our family in the process. The family also wishes to thank Providence Hospice for the help they provided in the last few weeks—April, Kathy, Brian, Ella Bess, Misty, and the others. The family wishes, too, to thank all the wonderful doctors and nurses that cared for her and for our family—Dr. Reis, Dr. Canning, Mindy, Steve, Sarah, Stephanie, and all the others.

Memorials may be made to Waco Montessori School or Klaras Children's Center ECI.
