Dorothy Freeman Jones, 92, of Waco, passed away Wednesday, July 23, 2014. Services will be 10 a.m. Monday, July 28, at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church by Rev. Aaron M.G. Zimmerman. Burial will follow in Robinson Cemetery. Visitation will be 3-5 p.m. Sunday at OakCrest Funeral Home, 4520 Bosque Boulevard.
Dorothy was born in Robinson to Charlie and Bernice (Donaldson) Smith, and graduated from Waco High School in 1940. Dorothy was widowed twice: She was married to Harold Freeman on August 11, 1943, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church by Rev. Scott Field Bailey (later Bishop). They were married for 45 years until his death in December, 1988. They had two children, Janice Catherine and William Harold. She was married to Walter Jones from February 14, 1991, until his death in June, 2001.
Dorothy worked 27 years for Waco Independent School District, retiring as coordinator of Food Services Department (now called Child Nutrition Services) on August 31, 1982. After her retirement, she and Harold traveled extensively, often with family. They especially enjoyed trips to Hawaii, Mexico, and Canada. They were also avid square and round dancers. Dorothy enjoyed working with the St. Alban’s Episcopal Church Alter Guild and St. Alban's Guild, holding various offices in those organizations.
After Dorothy married Walter, they enjoyed playing games, especially Forty-Two, several times a week with family and friends. After Walter's death, she played bridge with friends at Harrison Senior Center. In June 2004, she moved to Lake Air Tower where she started a weekly game night and played chicken-foot with other residents. She also continued to travel, going to London, England, with her daughter Janice, and to Italy for her step-grandson David's wedding.
Dorothy moved to Stilwell Retirement Center in February 2013 where she enjoyed meeting both new and old friends, playing many games of chicken-foot and Bingo, and attending the frequent musical events held there. She not only regularly walked and exercised but also was a dedicated participant in more than 1,000 exercise therapy sessions at the Providence Pulmonary Rehabilitation Center beginning in September 1998. Her will to live joyously and fully was an inspiration to all who knew her.
She is survived by her daughter, Janice McCoy and husband, Timothy, of Cumming, Ga.; son, William Freeman and wife, Lisa, of Menlo Park, Calif.; brother-in-law, Harold Humbert of Waco; nieces, Nancy Bennett and husband, Robert, of Centreville, Va., Kathy Bennett of Pflugerville, and Vicki King and husband, Forrest, of Gatesville; nephews, Miles King and wife, Allisa, of Cumming, Ia., Don King and wife, Jeanice, of Ft.
