On the morning of January 30, 2024, Joseph Edgar Onezime Garon, our beloved father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, cousin and friend to all, left this Earth peacefully and went home to be with his Lord and Savior, and to join his beloved wife of 47 years, Lyn who passed on October 25, 2023, while they were both in the hospital at the same time. We are sure there is a party going on in Heaven now!!!
On September 21, 1933, Joseph Edgar “Eddie” Onezime Garon was born to Albert and Juliette (Boucher) Garon as their fourth son in Berlin, New Hampshire. His mother and father immigrated to the United States from the province of Quebec, Canada. He is of French- Canadian descent. Eddie had three older brothers: Normand, Raymond and Robert. His parents later adopted their little sister, Madeleine. He attended Angel Guardian School and graduated from Notre Dame High School, in Berlin, New Hampshire. At that time, French was the predominant language in Berlin; even his high school annual was in French.
After graduation, he enlisted in the Air Force and served in the Korean War as a lineman. It was in the Air Force that he learned to speak English. Upon his return to the United States, he was stationed at James Connally Air Force Base in Waco, Texas. He arrived at the base on May 11, 1953, the day of the catastrophic tornado in Waco and was immediately sent to help clean up in the aftermath. He met his first wife, Kay Sims in Waco. They married in 1955 and had three children, Suzanne, Craig, and Michael and two daughters who did not survive their birth.
He met his second wife Omalene “Lyn” Herron in 1973 and they were married on January 31, 1976. A welcomed addition to the family, Lyn graciously and lovingly accepted his three children. Eddie worked for the Waco ISD and Precision Engineering in his early years and finally at Brazos Electric Coop, from where he retired at the age of 62 after 23 years of service. He was very involved in the Boy Scout Troop 326 of St. Louis Catholic Church with both of his sons and future son-in-law, who looked forward to the many camp outs, as did all of the other boys going camping with him. A self-taught carpenter, Eddie was passionate about woodworking and truly enjoyed his days in his shop, of which he was so proud. He loved life, loved fixing things, building cabinets, and just being in his shop. Anybody that knew him, knew he could “fix” anything! All kinds of projects were brought to him and he happily helped however he was able. And if he couldn’t help you, he would definitely offer you a beer. He never met a stranger and welcomed all into his home. Eddie often showed his love to his family by building beautiful wooden pieces, from furniture to intricate jewelry boxes, for them. When he built something, it was made to last, he would have it no other way. He felt the same way about all of his friendships too. To know Eddie was to know that he loved his family, his wife, Lyn, ice hockey, gambling trips with Lyn, hitting the local pawn shops on Fridays and going to dinner at Casa de Castillo after mass on Saturday nights.
He was a devout lifelong Catholic. He loved God wholeheartedly and prayed the rosary every night before bed. A strong model of true faith in God, he taught his children to pray and attend church, too. He faithfully attended St. Louis Catholic Church and had been a member there since it started in the cafeteria at St. Louis Catholic School.
Eddie was a man of integrity, honesty and goodness. He was raised to work hard, earn your way, and to believe in yourself…something he passed on to each of his kids. He loved his family beyond measure and positively impacted all of them in countless ways that will echo through many generations to come.
Eddie is survived by his daughter, Suzanne (Garon) Fulbright and husband, Tom; sons, Craig Garon and wife, Deanna, and Michael Garon and Cheryl Teague; six grandchildren, Tommy Fulbright, Kyle (Fulbright) Pillans, Stacy (Garon Laine) Herrin and husband, Brent, Amy Garon, Cody Garon and wife, Brandi, Ashlye (Garon) Ryan and husband, Andy; thirteen great grandchildren, Sebastian and Presley Fulbright, Kyah and Kolby Pillans, Abby Laine, Jaxon Herrin, Logan Toole, Roy Bernal, Gunner, Brody, Emma Garon, and Autumn and Lucy Ryan.
