Elizabeth Wells Roland, 102, of Waco, formerly of Memphis, TN, died Sunday, September 24. Friends may visit the family at the OakCrest Funeral Home, 4520 Bosque Blvd. Tuesday, September 26 from 6 to 8 PM. Funeral services will be at the Memphis Funeral Home, Poplar Chapel, in Memphis, TN with burial in Memphis Memorial Park on Thursday.
Mrs. Roland was born May 5, 1904, in Red Banks, Mississippi to John Frank Wells and Emma Hope Hancock. She moved to Memphis in 1907 and to Waco in 2004. She graduated from State Normal High School in 1922 and from Memphis University in 1957. She married Henry I. Roland on June 6, 1928. He preceded her in death in July, 1954. She was a teacher with the Shelby County Board of Education and the Memphis Board of Education for twenty-nine years. Twenty of her teaching years were at Grahamwood Elementary School in Memphis. She retired from Grahamwood in 1970. She was a member of Second Presbyterian Church in Memphis.
She is survived by two sons; Richard Roland and his wife, Jean, of Waco; Frank Roland and his wife, Catherine, of Queensbury, NY ; 10 grandchildren, and 17 great grandchildren.
The family would like to thank Visiting Angels, especially Michele Roberts; Hillcrest Hospice; Crestview Healthcare Residence; and Hillcrest Clinic-Hewitt, particularly Dr. Lauren Barron and Dr. James Graham, for their deep concern and excellent care during Mrs. Roland's two and a half years in Waco.
