Emily McKelvain
May 9, 1927 – November 12, 2015
Emily McKelvain, 88 of Waco, was called home on November 12, 2015 surrounded by her loved ones. Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 18, at the OakCrest Funeral Home Chapel, 4520 Bosque Boulevard, Waco, with Rev. Su Milam of First Waco Methodist and Jake Morphew of Speegleville United Methodist officiating. Burial will follow in Post Oak Cemetery in Oglesby, Texas.Visitation will be Tuesday, November 17 from 5 to 7 pm at the funeral home.
Emily was born May 9, 1927 in Waco, TX to Coke Mills, Sr. and Olivia Mills. She grew up in the old Lake Waco community of Speegleville , TX where she attended Speegleville Elementary. She graduated from Waco High in 1944 and then went on to graduate from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX.
Emily was a dedicated teacher who taught school in the Oglesby ISD until she retired after 23 years. After retiring she was a substitute teacher for Waco ISD and also worked at the Methodist Home in Waco.
Emily married Carter McKelvain of Oglesby, Texas in 1951. Together they made their home and raised their children in Oglesby, Texas. After the death of her husband, Emily moved to Waco to be closer to her children. She was living at Stilwell Retirement Home at the time of her passing. She was a lifelong Methodist and was currently a member of First Waco Methodist.
Emily truly cherished her son, daughter, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She gave them unconditional love above and beyond her role as Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother. She was a deeply loving, kind and a wonderful role model.
Emily was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and sisters, Margaret Mills McDaniel and Anne Mills Underwood.
Survivors include her children, son Don McKelvain and wife Debbie of Waco, her daughter Jane McKelvain Holt and husband Michael of Speegleville, brother Coke Mills, Jr. and wife Margaret of Waco, grandchildren Amanda McKelvain of Northlake, Texas, Jason McKelvain and wife Amanda of China Spring, Chris McKelvain of Fort Worth, Texas, great grandchildren Jordan, Ashlyn and Autumn, along with many nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Amanda McKelvain, Jason McKelvain, Chris McKelvain, Jordan Bowars, Terry McDaniel, Bill McDaniel, John Herring and Richard Coke Mills III. Honorary pallbearers Joe McKelvain and Coke Mills, Jr.
