Ernest George Veselka, 87, of Waco, passed away Tuesday, August 10, 2010 at his residence.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 16, at the Waco Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel by Father John Guzaldo. Military honors by the U.S. Marines will follow. Visitation will be 6 - 8 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 15, at OakCrest Funeral Home, 4520 Bosque Blvd. A Memorial Video honoring his life will be shown during the visitation.

Ernest was born in West to Jim and Emily Veselka. He graduated from LaVega High School where he ran track and played football. He joined the Marines on September 11, 1942 and served until November 30, 1945 in the 22nd Marines Pacific Defense Group as a leader of the Rapid-Fire Gun Squadron and Commander of the Guard at Camp Gillespie. He was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Medal with three Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Medal, and WWII Victory Medal. During the war he served on the Gilbert, Kwajalein, Roi Namur Atoll, and Marshall Islands. He met Dolores Lien in 1943 in San Diego, Calif., while stationed at Camp Gillespie. They married in California in 1944, and were together for 65 years.

Ernest worked 43 years as production manager at Wm. Cameron Co., later known as Certain-Teed. He was a talented woodworking craftsman and cabinet-marker. He used his talent to make extra money for vacations and worked two jobs most of his life. He loved fishing, camping, hunting at the deer lease, staying at the ranch and the lake. He also loved barbeque and eating at Jasper's. His main joy in life was being with his beloved family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his siblings, Bill, Victor, Henry, Louis, George, and Jerry.

He is survived by his wife, Dolores; four daughters, Judy and David Abbott of Cedar Creek Lake, Patty Sunderland of Austin, Cindy and Mark Boyd of Waco, and Kandi and Carl Young of Georgetown; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren, and sister, Irene Rogers.

Pallbearers will be Kevin Abbott, Korey Abbott, Kris Abbott, Austin Herd, Alan Boyd, and Dillon Young.

Memorials may be made to Hillcrest Hospice and Fuzzy Friends.
