Eugene (Gene) Dalton Havis, age 82, passed away peacefully at his home January 4, 2011.
Funeral services will be at St. Mark Lutheran Church, 2000 Clay, officiated by Reverend Jim Price at 3 p.m. Friday, January 7th. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be at OakCrest Funeral Home, 4520 Bosque Blvd. on January 6th from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Gene Havis was born on May 31, 1928 near Hubbard, Texas. He was the eldest son of Dee and Essie (Gladney) Havis.
Gene attended schools near Hubbard and graduated from Bynum High School in 1945. He was a long time employee of Bird-Kultgen Ford, starting as a mechanic. He served his country during the occupation of Japan in 1946-1947. He was united in marriage to the love of his life, Ruth Marie Markwardt on February 12, 1948.
Gene was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church for over 50 years. Gene and Ruth operated antique and ceiling fan stores in Waco and Fort Worth.
Gene's life was marked with great kindness and patience. He was quick to lend a helping hand to strangers in need, and graciously shared his passions for camping, traveling, and fishing with many good friends, but especially his beloved family and grandchildren. He will be remembered for his wry wit, easy smile, and big heart.
He was preceded in death by his parents, infant son Michael Gene Havis, and brothers, Donald Ray (Jack) and Kenneth Havis.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth of 62 years; sons, David Havis and Jackie Havis-Shear of Edwardsville, IL and Scott Havis of Portland, OR; Vanessa Fiola of Los Angeles, CA; brothers, Hilton and wife, Sue of Axtell, Danny and wife, Lucy of Temple; sisters, Leatrice Motley of Hubbard, Essie Dee Huse of Tyler and Mary Schronk of Waco; brothers-in-law Dean Markwardt and wife, Colleen of Waco, Hub Markwardt and wife, Rae Nell of Weatherford; grandchildren, Joseph and Tim of Decatur, IL, Grace and Bethanne of Edwardsville, IL; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express gratitude to Gene's physicians; Dr. Artie Sudan, Dr. Maydee Rosario, and Dr. Robert Anderson as well as Providence Hospice Care provider Benny Urban, and our many good friends and blessed relatives.
Pall bearers for the service are Tim and Joe Havis, Stan Harris, Danny Havis, Dean Markwardt, and Darrell Motley.
Honorary pall bearers are Bill Williams, Charlie Furrer, Sam Roebuck, Lynn Gibson, Michael Harvey, Alfred Adler, Charles Mott, Glenn Zgabay, DJ Huse, Fred Radle and Fred Horn.
Memorials may be made to St. Mark Lutheran Church, Providence Hospice Care, or American Lung Association.
