George B. Batson, 89, of Waco, passed away Saturday, March 20, 2010 at Providence Hospital.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 23, at OakCrest Funeral Home with Rev. Barry Camp officiating. Burial will follow at Waco Memorial Park. Visitation will be 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. Monday at OakCrest Funeral Home, 4520 Bosque Blvd., Waco.

George was born March 12, 1921 in Normangee, Texas, to J.E. and Maxie Batson. He graduated from Waco High School in 1939 and from Baylor University in 1946. He was in the U.S. Army during WWII, serving under General Patton as a German translator. He taught at schools in Riesel and at University High School in Waco, teaching German, math, and business courses. He sponsored the Key Club for 25 years.

George was a competitive table tennis player at the YMCA with his partner, Grady Gordon. He won many trophies playing in tournaments around the national and Texas, and was once the state champion for men over 50. George loved Baylor Sports, especially football and basketball, and he worked for many years at the pass gate during football games. He was a member of Highland Baptist Church where he was a Deacon and also Sunday School leader for the Bible Fellowship for 30 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Michael.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy Batson; son, Mark Batson and wife, Joanne; daughter, Suzy Moffatt and husband, Dial; five grandchildren, Derek and Jared Moffatt, and Blake, Jordan and Christen Batson; and seven great-grandchildren.
