George Edward Matthews, 63, of Elm Mott, passed away Tuesday, May 12, 2009.
George Edward Matthews, 63, of Elm Mott, lost his hard fought battle with cancer Tuesday, May 12, 2009. Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at the OakCrest Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jody Gousset officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, at the funeral home.
George was born Dec. 30, 1945, in Kerns, and grew up in Corsicana. He graduated from Corsicana High School in 1965. He served his country proudly with the Army from November of 1965 to November of 1967. He was stationed in Vietnem in 1966-1967. He met and married the love of his life, Opal Lewis, at Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo. He owned and operated an Exxon Service Station in Waco, until 1975, at which time he became an over the road truck driver as an owner-operator. He did this until is retirement in November of 2007, due to his health.
George was preceded in death by his parents, Earvin and Linnie Matthews; and two sisters, Mary Ann and Nina Ruth.
Left to mourn his passing are his "girls", his wife of 41 years, Opal; daughter, Stephanie Uceda and husband, Luis; sisters, Flo Box and husband, CK of Conroe, and Annie Belle Wiseman of Staunton, VA; brothers, Earvin Matthews of Malikoff, TX, and James Matthews of Waaco; his dear friend who was like a brother, Wayland Gene Burke of Waco; his namesake, George Robert Box of Conroe; a host of brothers- and sisters-in-law from Missouri and Arizona; his extended family, Rosa, Sonya, Wendy, Vanessa and Sadie; special friends, Carl and Juanita Smith, Patsy Peck and Floyd Woycheshan; and his little dog, Miss Kitty.
Pallbearers will be, Floyd Woycheshan, Carl Smith, Wayne Dawson, Larry Lewis, Jim Lewis and Howard Jobe. Honorary pallbearer, Frank Lewis.
