Gilbert Merrill

Gilbert Darwin Merrill

March 23, 1922 - September 29, 2011

Gil Merrill, 89, of Waco, went to be with his Lord September 29, 2011 while in the care of his daughter and son-in-law, Carol Lee and Gary Covelli of Austin. Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, October 1, at Western Heights Baptist Church, 6301 Bosque Blvd., with Rev. Nathan Booth officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Waco Memorial Park.

Visitation with his family will be 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, September 30, at OakCrest Funeral Home, 4520 Bosque Blvd.

Gil was born March 23, 1922 in Bristow, Iowa to Joseph Francis and Clara Jane Merrill. He graduated from Aredale High School in 1941. Gil and Mildred Marie Blackwell were married June 3, 1944 in Gainesville, Texas.

He served honorably in the United States Army from December 15, 1942 until December 15, 1945. While in the European theater, he was a personal bodyguard to General Anthony "Nuts" McAuliffe. After his discharge, Gil and Marie moved to Waterloo, Iowa where their two children, Randy and Carol Lee were born. He "got back to Texas" as soon as he could, moving to Waco in 1951. He started Gil Merrill Interiors in 1967, helping decorate many fine homes and businesses until his retirement.

Gil loved his Lord, his precious wife, Marie of 64 years, his children, grandchildren and his extended family and friends. Even to the end of his earthly journey, his loyalty, his servant spirit and sense of humor marked him as a man. Gil was a member of Western Heights Baptist Church and the Crusader's Sunday School Class.

Survivors include Randy and Nancy Merrill of Waco, Carol Lee and Gary Covelli of Austin; and the apples of his eye, granddaughters, Allison Merrill and Abby Merrill.

For their care of Gil, the family would like to thank Dr. Charles Stern, Scott & White Hospice and Physical Therapy, Lake Shore Estates, and Phoenix Care.
