Harry Melendy

Rev. Harry William Melendy, 88, of Waco, was ushered into the presence of his Lord on June 7, 2009.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 13, 2009 at Christ the King Baptist Church, 4777 Lake Shore Drive, with the Rev. Ramiro Pena and the Rev. Robert Painter officiating.

Harry was born May 26, 1921 to Rev. William C. and Nellie G. Melendy in Morgan, Colo., and was the first of their three sons. Harry was drawn to the ministry at a young age. He met the love of his life, Melba Gaston, while serving as pastor at the small Christian Church in her hometown of Morrowville, Kansas. On May 15, 1942, they were married by Harry's father in a simple ceremony in the home of Melba's parents, who then resided in Wichita, Kansas.

Harry and Melba were blessed with five children. They moved their young family to Waco in 1948 to be near Harry's parents after his father was admitted to the V.A. Hospital. Harry worked at General Tire for 23 years, while remaining active in the ministry. He led the worship at Trinity Church for many years and blessed others with his beautiful tenor voice.

He was superintendent of Trinity Christian School and served as joint pastor of Trinity Church with Rev. Robert Painter after the death of Rev. Ted McElroy in 1972. Harry and Melba have attended Christ the King Baptist Church for the past 9 years and have been blessed through the ministry of Rev. Ramiro Pena.

Harry was well-known in the community as a white bass fisherman. He enjoyed sharing his talent and love of fishing with others. He was also a skilled maker of custom hunting knives. Because of their high quality and unique design, they were often special ordered to be given as gifts.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Lloyd A. Melendy; and his granddaughter, Tamara Morris.

Harry is survived by his wife of 67 years, Melba Melendy; children, Janice Emmitt, Virginia Cargill and husband, Tommy, Lloyd Melendy and wife, Karen, Larry Melendy and wife, Judy, Debra Priest and husband, Michael; brother, Robert Melendy and wife, Judy; 18 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and 2 great great-grandchildren.
