Harry Lee Whitaker

Harry Lee Whitaker, 91, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, March 5, 2013. Services will be 12:30 p.m. Saturday, March 9, at Seventh & James Baptist Church, 602 James Avenue, Waco, with Rev. Erin Conaway officiating. A private burial at Oakwood Cemetery will precede the service. The visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Friday, March 8, at OakCrest Funeral Home, 4520 Bosque Boulevard, Waco.
Harry was born November 11,1921 in Mt. Holly, NC to Arthur Whitaker and Grace Bost. As a child, he lived with his Grandfather Bost and Aunt Katie, then went to live in the Methodist Children's Home in Winston Salem, NC from the age of 8 to 18. He learned the printing trade by working after school at the local newspaper and he worked as a linotype operator until he was drafted Jan. 1, 1943. Harry served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946 and then re-enlisted in the US air Force in 1947.
During 23 years of service he served overseas in Guam, Philippines, Korea, and Germany. In June 1967 he retired as a Master Sergeant and came to live in Waco. On August 28, 1954 Harry and Geraldine Sheppard were married in Gastonia, NC. In 1955 they welcomed their first child, Leigh Angela, into the world in Montgomery, AL. In 1959 their first son, Roger Nelson, was born in Waco, TX, and in 1961 their third child, Robin Keith, was born in Wiesbaden, Germany.
During his time in Waco Harry worked at Hall Printing and Meadows Springfield Printing companies. He retired from full time work in the late 1980s, but he remained active in many organizations. He worked part-time for many years and gave back to the community through the Meals on Wheels program for over a decade. He was also an active participant at Seventh and James Baptist Church, where he ran the sound for services. Harry had many interests. He was the family photographer and loved square-dancing for 25 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Grace Bost Whitaker; his daughter, Leigh Seipp, and his son, Roger Whitaker.
He leaves behind his loving wife of 58 years, Gerry, his son Rob and wife Pamela, four grandchildren, one step-granddaughter, and countless friends who will cherish the memories they have with him.
