Hazel was born March 18, 1920 in The Grove, Texas, the youngest daughter of W. F. Johnston and Bertha Lee Grissom. She graduated from Flat High School in 1937. Hazel married Wilson C. Henderson on November 9, 1938 and they made their home in Waco for most of their married life. Hazel is preceded in death by her husband Wilson; son, Ronald W. Henderson; a grandson, Jon Henderson and all her brothers and sisters.
Hazel was one of earliest members of the Lake Shore Baptist Church. She loved and was loved by many members of that church. She taught pre-school Sunday school classes for 40 years and in doing so, impacted the lives of many young children. In August of 1995, Hazel was honored by the church for her many years of service. The best explanation of her impact on the lives of children was written in a special book presented to her on that occasion. In that book, one little boy summed up the feelings of so many, "Thank you for teaching me about God". Another wrote, "I really loved you and was happy when I was with you". "Miss Hazel" was described as "a gift to young mothers, who could safely leave their children in the hands of a trusted teacher." This trust extended beyond the church as she lovingly kept the children of many friends and family in her home through the years, becoming a second mom and grandparent to many. Her gentle and patient manner was appreciated by all.
Hazel many times expressed her love and appreciation for those special friends, who through their unfailing support truly demonstrated what it is to be a part of the family of God. Hazel was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, teacher and friend.
Hazel is survived by her sons, Sam Henderson and wife Nancy of Anderson, South Carolina; Gary Henderson and wife Bridget of Kerrville, Texas; 5 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews who loved her.
Any memorials in lieu of flowers, may be made to Lake Shore Baptist Church or the church of your choice.
