Helen J. Jones, 94, went to be with her Lord Friday May 23, 2014. Graveside services will be 2 pm Tuesday, May 27, 2014 at Oakwood Cemetery with Rev. Barry Camp officiating. Visitation will be Monday 5 to 7 pm at OakCrest Funeral Home.
Mrs. Jones was born in Giddings, Texas to Tony Gooch and Emilie Anschutz Gooch. Helen was a dorm parent for the children at Waco Center for Youth during which time she was named Waco "Mother of the Year." Thereafter she continued to share her love and care for others while working at the Baylor men's athletic dining hall where she "adopted" the athletes. Finally, until her health required retirement, she continued to express her servant's heart and love for Baylor by providing food service at the Baylor Bear Club at Floyd Casey Stadium. In retirement her love for Baylor focused on the Lady Bears, where she rarely missed a game in person or on television. Mrs. Jones received honorary degrees from both Baylor University and University of Texas.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Charles S. and son Charles A. Jones, sister Lucille Graham, and brother Frank Gooch.
Mrs. Jones is survived by a daughter Emilie Whitaker and husband Wayne; daughter-in-law Sara Jones; grandchildren Ashley Jones, Patrick Whitaker and wife Michelle, Michael Whitaker and wife Jeann, and Matthew Whitaker. Great grandchildren Morgan, Jackson, Georgia and Brock Whitaker. Sister-in-law Louise Gooch, neice Cindy Gooch and nephews Tony Gooch and Bill Graham. Other relatives, friends, neighbors and "adopted" former Baylor athletes.
Honorary pallbearers Wayne Whitaker, Patrick Whitaker, Michael Whitaker, Matthew Whitaker and Don Wooliff. The family's heartfelt gratitude is extended to the staff of Ridgecrest Retirement Center and Providence Hospice.
