Herbert Louis “Chris” Rice
Oct. 12, 1931-May 27, 2023
Herbert Louis “Chris” Rice, 91, passed away in Waco peacefully of natural causes on Saturday, May 27.
Born in San Antonio to Beatrice M. (Mumme) Rice and Herbert E. Rice, he has had a long and prosperous journey in this life, including attending Moye Military Academy, St. Mary’s University and the University of Texas, where he earned the equivalent of a Ph.D.
A Chemical Engineer by trade, he moved from Austin to his first job in Houston and lived there 10-plus years; he took another job in Ft. Worth and lived there for more than 10 years. He then moved to San Antonio to be near― and care for ―his aging mother.
He spent countless hours and much money over the years, serving as a Knights of Columbus, Church Choir Leader, a Meals on Wheels driver, and donating to the Carmelite nuns and other causes, and so much more.
“Chris” (so called due to his birth date on Columbus Day), loved many things in life, including dancing, golfing, singing, Mexican food, playing the piano and much more. His favorite activity was tennis, and he played the game consistently until he was 87 years old.
After his mother’s passing, he moved to Waco to be near his daughter.
Herbert is preceded in death by his son, Michael B. Rice.
He is survived by his beloved children; Raymond Rice and Mary (Rice) Drennon, as well as his other “son,” Bill Feeley; and a grandson; Michael McKim, and wife, Jennifer; and three great-grandchildren; Christian, Kayla, and Sean.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, June 9, 2023, at St. Mary’s Cemetery in San Antonio, 1035 Dakota St, San Antonio, TX 78203.
