Howard Francis Mauldin, Jr., 87, of Waco, died peacefully at his home Wednesday, September 22, 2010.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, September 25, 2010 at Restland Cemetery in Dallas. Visitation will be held 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday, September 24, at OakCrest Funeral Home, 4520 Bosque Blvd.
Howard was born in Paris, Texas August 3, 1923 to Grace and Howard Mauldin, Sr. Soon after graduating from Highland Park High School in Dallas, he volunteered as a radio operator in the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, and France. Following World War II, he attended SMU, graduating with a degree in Business Administration. He married Patricia Ann Russell in 1948, and lived on the Meredith Ranch near Quinlan, Texas, where they raised their son, Chuck. In 1956, they moved to Dallas, where Howard was involved in several business ventures, notably the Frontier Printing Company. In 1982, he retired and moved to Waco. His wife, Patsy, died in 1992. A year later, he married Yeulalo Shaw of Waco and became a treasured member of her extended family.
Howard was a talented wood carver. He loved to read, especially historical accounts and novels. He was an avid golfer and a member of Ridgewood Country Club. Visiting with all his friends at the club was important to him; he played gin rummy with many of them every Monday. His grandchildren will always remember him as a fierce competitor in 42.
He is survived by his wife, Yeulalo; his son, Chuck Mauldin and wife, Barbara; Yeulalo's daughter, Mary Beth Obenoskey and husband, Buddy; 3 grandchildren, Jeffery Mauldin and wife, Lauri, Clayton Mauldin and wife, Kasuen, and Carrie Russell and husband, Chris; and 3 great-grandchildren , Charlie, Annika, and Rebecca.
In recognition of his membership in the Shriners organization, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Shriners Children's Hospital in Dallas.
