Col. Hubert Nathan Dean, Retired
August 17, 1920 – March 9, 2013
Hubert Dean, 92, of Austin, passed away March 9, 2013. Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church Moody with Dr. Tom Shelton officiating. Burial with full military honors will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Robinson Cemetery. He was a man of faith and love for Our Savior Jesus Christ, his family, and his country.
Hubert was born August 17, 1920 in Chilton to James Austin and Lola Jane (Truitt) Dean. His mother died when he was two years old, and he and his younger siblings were raised at the Corsicana State Home for a few years until his father remarried.
After graduating from Chilton High School as Class Poet, Hubert attended University of Texas where he played football and was a Golden Glove Boxing Champion. He entered the Army Air Corps during WWII and served in Italy as a gunner on the B-17 Flying Fortress.
He married Winnie Glendene McKee on May 31, 1943 while he was stationed in Kansas for basic training. He was selected as one of the first men to enter the newly established Air Force as a pilot. Thirty years later he retired from the military with the rank of colonel. After retiring he and Glendene lived in Austin for 29 years. Hubert was an active member of Hyde Park Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, usher, and Sunday School director and teacher.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his five brothers and sisters, and his wife of 68 years.
He is survived by three children, Sharla Willis and husband, G.W. of Moody, Joei Sheckman and husband, Les of Los Angeles, and Tracy McCollum and husband, Chris, of Austin; and grandchildren, Greg Willis and wife Jolie and their children, Connor and Camden, and Katie, Bonnie, and Paul McCollum of Austin.
