Hugh Clark Garland, 92, of Waco, passed away peacefully Friday, April 29, 2011 at his home surrounded by his loving family including, Helen "Jackie", his wife of 70 years.
Visitation with his family will be 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Saturday, April 30 at OakCrest Funeral Home, 4520 Bosque Blvd, followed by a funeral procession to Oakwood Cemetery for a 3:30 p.m. graveside service.
Clark was born July 1, 1918 in Waco and made it his home for life. While starting in football at Waco High School, Clark met the love of his life, Jackie Whitaker. They were married February 1, 1941, by Dr. W.W. Melton, who was the father of one of Jackie's childhood friends. Clark served his country during WWII in the Army Air Corp. After his service time, Clark spent 14 years with the Waco Police Department as a Patrolman, being shot once in the line of duty. Clark later continued his law enforecment career in the private sector as co-owner and operator with his wife, Jackie, of Waco Patrol Service and Detective Agency for 46 years.
Clark had a passion for the outdoors whether it was boating, hunting or flying. He spent many hours on Lake Waco in a variety of boats, traveled on numerous hunting trips and enjoyed flying his own aircraft while insuring his sons learned to fly too. Even though Clark enjoyed all of these activities, his real love was for his family. His 70 years with Jackie blessed them with three children, eight grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren and was the foundation of his fondest memories.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved daughter, Jane Grant; and his brother, Allen Garland.
Clark is survived by his wife, Jackie; sons, Hugh Garland, Jr. and wife, Gladys Ann of China Spring and Joe Garland and wife, Kim, of Orlando, Florida; his brother, Robert Garland and wife, Darilene, of San Antonio; eight grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.
The Garland family is eternally grateful for the prayers and support of our friends, their church families, Providence Hospice and the Visiting Angels.
In lieu of floral arrangements, the family requests that any memorials be directed to Western Heights Baptist Church or to Providence Hospice in Clark's memory.
