Ila Jo Alsobrook Thompson, 56, of Waco, went home to the Lord on Sunday, March 1, 2009.
Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 4 at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at OakCrest Funeral Home.
Ila was born January 5, 1953 to Barney and Elzabelle Alsobrook in Alice, Texas. She graduated from Permian High School in Odessa in 1971 and graduated with a BA in Education from Lubbock Christian College in 1974. While in Lubbock, Ila met her future husband, Michael, and they were married on May 11, 1974. After several moves that took them around the country, Mike and Ila settled in Odessa in 1982 where Ila taught in Odessa Christian schools. While in Odessa, Mike and Ila were blessed wth their first adopted son, Richard James Thompson in 1986 and in 1988, they adopted their second son, Timothy Michael Thompson. With their young family in hand, Mike and Ila moved to Waco to open Pack & Mail of Waco, a shipping and mail parcel business that has been successful for twenty years. With the business established, Ila started taking classes at what was then Texas State Technical College where she earned an Associate's Degree in Computer Science followed up by a Novel Certified Network Engineer and Instructor Certifications. Soon after receiving her certificate, she began teaching and instructing at TSTC and McLennan Community College. Following work with WISD and Central Freight, Ila devoted her time to her family while developing an interactive computerized Bible curriculum for Sunday schools. Ila was very active in her church singing and teaching Sunday school until she was stricken with illness in 2002.
Ila was preceded in death by her parents, Barney and Elzabelle Alsobrook; her brother, Jim Alsobrook; and her sister, Judy Greene.
She is survived by her husband, Michael Thompson of Waco; sons, James and Timothy Thompson; father-in-law, Charles Thompson; and many nieces and nephews.
Her family would like to thank the staff of Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center and especially Dr. Bishara for their dedication to Ila over the years of her illness.
