Irene Barton

Irene Barton died on February 22nd, 2014 of natural causes at Round Rock St. David’s hospital in Round Rock Texas. She was 91 years old. She was in the company of her sons and daughters as she peacefully gave up her spirit to the Lord.

Irene Louise Hejl was born in Tokio, Texas, a small community between Waco and West, attended school in Ross Texas and graduated from West High School. In the early 1940’s she met Rudolph Paul Barton and they were married in 1943. In 1949 Irene and Rudy moved to a home in Waco where they lived most of their lives and where they raised their 5 children. Rudy preceded Irene in death in 1996. Their eldest son, James, also preceded her in death in July of 2013. In the summer of 2013 Irene moved to Round Rock, Texas in order to be closer to her children and she resided at Provident Crossing, an independent-living retirement community.

She is survived by her daughters, Clare Guidry of Houston and husband Dennis, Dorothy Bettis of Austin and husband Berkley; she is survived also by her sons, Don Barton of Round Rock and wife Debra and Paul Barton of Round Rock. She is also survived by 6 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, and by her beloved sister, Mary Bezdek from Ross, Texas.

Irene was a devout Catholic and a member of St Louis Catholic Church in Waco. She prayed the rosary and read from her prayer book every night before bedtime. As a young mother, she insisted that her children would be raised in the Catholic faith and she and Rudy made major sacrifices for that to be accomplished.

Irene spent many years working in the grocery business, often working along side of her husband, until she retired in 1982. She was an excellent seamstress and she spent much time in her early retirement years sewing and doing craftwork. She was an avid gardener and a wonderful cook.

The family would like to thank the staff and residents of Provident Crossing who welcomed her so warmly and the family would like to thank those at Round Rock St. David’s Hospital ICU unit who made her last days as comfortable as possible.

Funeral services will be held on February 28 at 2PM at St Louis Catholic Church in Waco. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to Reicher Catholic High School in Waco, 2102 N. 23rd Street, Waco TX 76708.
