Iris Maddox

Iris Swales Maddox, 78, of Robinson passed away June 22, 2005, at St. Catherine's Care Center. Her death followed a five year battle against heart disease, arterial disease, stroke and cancer. Her strength, determination and courage will be remembered by all who knew her.

Visitation for friends and family will be Friday, June 24, 2005 at OakCrest Funeral Home, 4520 Bosque Blvd. from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, June 25, 2005, at St. Albans Episcopal Church, 515 Columbus Avenue, Waco, Texas. Graveside services will follow at Bosqueville Cemetery.

Iris was born May 2, 1927 in Blackburn, Lancashire, England and was our "Lancashire Lass". Her childhood was marked by both World War I and World War II. She was proudest of winning a scholarship to Blackburn High school, where she received a "prep" school education. After her graduation, she worked at Blackburn Hospital.

She met her future husband in Blackburn and after the war time romance she married James Alford Maddox in Waco in 1946. They lived in a cabin on old Lake Waco and she soon adapted to Texas ways. She had three children and then began her career at Baylor University as a student loan officer. She gave her heart and soul to Baylor for 26 years. After her retirement, she enjoyed on of her passions, traveling, exploring Colorado, New Mexico, sunning on the coast at Port Aransas and returning to the home of her heart, England when she could. She gardened and walked every day.

She was a caring, loving mother, a hardworking wife and a loyal employee. Her greatest joy was her grandchildren whom she played with, cared fro and loved. She was a long time member of St. Albans Episcopal Church. Iris was a member of the Transatlantic Wives Association and the Britannia Club, where she made many life-long friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Elizabeth Swales and aunt, Lettice Whiteoak.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, James Alford Maddox, daughter, Candace Banning and husband Powell Banning; daughter, Susan Vanvoorhis and husband Joseph; daughter, Rosemary Bradford and husband James, grandchildren, Melissa Muise and husband James, Joseph Vanvoorhis and wife Nicole, Elizabeth Malloy and husband Ryan, Megan Banning, Adrienne Bradford and Adam Bradford. She had four great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff at St. Elizabeth's and St. Catherine's and Hospice for their care over this long illness.
