Irish Rose Artis-Gittens
April 12, 1948 – November 11, 2007
Irish Rose Artis – Gittens 59, of Waco passed away on Sunday, November 11, 2007 at a local hospital.
A Memorial Service and Visitation with the family will be held Saturday November 17, at OakCrest Funeral Home. The Visitation with the family will be from 10:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The Memorial Service will commence at 11:00 a.m.
Irish "Rose", as she was well-known, was born in Smithfield, N.C. on April 12, 1948. She graduated from Johnston County Training School in 1967 and was very active in school activities, particularly in the band as a majorette.
Rose attended Wake Technical Institute in Raleigh, NC, where she received her LPN and continued to pursue her love for nursing at Winston-Salem State University in Winston-Salem, NC where she graduated as a registered nurse.
After graduation, she worked at the Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Over the course of many years, Rose continued to expand on her love for nursing and adventure.
She moved to Texas in the early 1980's, where she met and married Dr. Kenneth Gittens. In 1984 she was awarded the Outstanding Young Women of America Award.
Rose loved to travel, shop for antiques, and spend time with her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband Dr. Kenneth Gittens; mother, Corene Lee Artis; and sister, Lorraine Coley.
Rose leaves to cherish her memory: a sister, Louise Nixon (Marshall) of Smithfield, N.C.; a brother, Charles Artis, of Washington, D.C.; nieces Angela Wright (Kenneth), of Washington, D.C.; Marsha Nixon-Smalls (Curtis);of Winston Salem, N.C.; great nieces: Lauren Smalls, Faith Nixon, Dawn Sorrell, Dayna Sorrell; great nephew: Jerome Baisey; and a host of friends, extended family and colleagues.
